PCS Leave

We are now within one week of our departure from the US! Crazy!

We've been back in our hometown since right before Christmas (about 3.5 weeks) and I must say, it's been a whirlwind. It feels like time has flown and also like we've been here forever all at the same time.

A big chunk of our time has been spent trying to get healthy! Southern Ohio as a whole seems to be infected with a nasty respiratory bug right now. My mom had pneumonia over Christmas, my dad had a serious sinus infection and double ear infection, the Soldier had an ugly cold for a few weeks, and I lost my voice and was severely congested for about a week and a half! Thankfully, we are all feeling a bit better.

That's not to say we haven't had some fun!

We spent a wonderful overnight at Great Wolf Lodge playing in their massive indoor water park.

We've played in the snow!

The boys loved it so much! They and my little sister spent almost that entire day outside.

We've celebrated our Buckeyes rolling over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and beating Oregon in the the final playoff to become the National Champions!

And we've spent lots of time with our amazing family and friends.

It's been a pretty good couple of weeks. I've had a few hard, emotional days. That's to be expected I suppose. My husband reminds me daily that it's all going to be just fine, that in the big picture the things I'm worried about are small, and that we are not going to be away forever. Thank goodness for that man. I don't know what I'd do without him.

Blessed Little Boys

The past week has left me wondering how I got so lucky to have such wonderful family. Jack and Jonah will never need for love. They are so very loved by many people.

My mom and sister came to visit last week to help out while daddy was in the field. I think my mom and I totally under-estimated the noise level 3 children can create. Jack and Avery spent HOURS riding circles around my house on Jack's two ride-on toys... and playing "toss the ball"... and fighting over a certain toy.. and then fighting over a different toy. And poor Avery tends to get the crappy end of the deal most the time, as Jack is just learning the concept of sharing. We only ventured out once all together, and that was for Steak n' Shake.
All the chaos was worth it though. Even though we're 14 years apart, I think we'll be silly and have fun together.

After mama and Avery left, Jeff's family got to town later that evening. They were here for the weekend and we had a fabulous time. They some really adorable Harley Davidson shirts for the boys. Jonah's reads "From cradle to chrome!" haha. We ate at Cracker Barrel, where uncle Justin and Jack tested out all the rocking chairs.

We took them to the museum here on Fort Campbell (which was also my first trip there). It was pretty cool to see all the history of the 101st Airborne Division and all that they've done over the years. After that we headed over the splash park to let the kids play, where Aunt Lauren helped Jack get used to the water (he spent most the first 20 minutes clinging to her leg and running from the water).

And most importantly Jonah got all the attention and love he could handle from his grandparents and aunt and uncle.
[The Davis boys: Jeff, Jack, Justin, Jonah, and John (Jacob is missing)]

We hope both my family and and Jeff's had a great time visiting, because we sure enjoyed their company!
We are so thankful to have so many wonderful friends and family.

As I mentioned before, my best friend Erin was here the whole week of Jonah's birth. She stayed at home with Jack while we were in the hopsital and just did whatever we needed her to do. Jack had a great time (as always). He loooooves you Erin. Oh, and she also made some adorable tye dye shirts for the boys.
And a few days after Jonah was born, my dad and brother came to visit! They brought tons of stuff for Jonah, and for Jack too! So yes dad, thank for the third set of blocks that ends up all over my floor every day (:

[Said blocks are seen here, with grandpa Kevin and his grandsons]

Jack and Jonah, you are two lucky little boys.

Meet Jonah!

I've been MIA for a while now.. but.. see if this is good enough reason for you..

Jonah Allen Davis
Born July 11, 2011
7:45pm
8 lbs 7 oz
21 inches

Tomorrow he will be a week old, and I can't believe how fast time is flying already. I guess that happens when you have two boys under 2. Speaking of my boys, Jack is learning more about being a big brother everday. It's been an adjustment for him (and it still is). But he loves Jonah and that's completely obvious, which of course makes this mama's heart melt.

Thank you to everyone thats been a help to my family during the past week. To my mom and Avery for coming down and being whatever I need them to be. To my best friend,
Erin, for being the constant fun and love that Jack needed while mommy and daddy were away. And to everyone who has come to visit as well :) We are so very blessed to have wonderful friends and family.

Bear with me as I start my life as a mommy of two.

I will probably post way too many pictures and mention "the boys' did this" way too much. But I'm the mama, that's my job :)

One year ago today

You know that feeling...

Of anticipation...

And getting everything and everyone ready...

And then you finally see what you've been waiting for...

And your heart skips a beat because it (he) is right in front of you!

And then finally you get to hug him, to hand him his son (who he hasn't seen since he was two weeks old).

and then you finally feel like your complete again.

Yeah, I know that feeling :)
One year ago today, I brought him home after a year long deployment.

And I'll forever remember that feeling like it was just yesterday.

Hope for Joplin

If you've been following us for a while you might remember "Uncle Dan Dan". Daniel Wermuth is a great friend of our family. He is a fellow medic who worked with Jeff in 2-17 FA from 2007-2011 including a deployment to Afghanistan. He lived with us in Washington up until we PCSed to Campbell. In that time he became a part of our family, a permanent piece to our puzzle.
[He and Jack spent many days singing and playing together]

Dan is from Joplin, Missouri. And how could anyone forget the devestation that ripped through his hometown a short time ago. Dan was able to be put on emergency leave from the Army to go home for 2 weeks ASAP after the tornado hit. His dad is a pastor there and the Wermuth family has been a major part of the relief efforts there. In those two weeks Dan was home.. they helped 3500 families and served 20,000 meals. But of course, Dan had to return to Fort Lewis, Washington. His leave was up.
The brotherhood of medics that 2-17 FA has, is a strong one. These guys never hesitate when one of them is in need, be it big or small. Jeff and I feel very blessed to have been a part of that family. Not missing a beat, they have stepped up to help out Dan.

Dan and 8 other medics are giving up their 4th of July leave to fly to Joplin, MO and do whatever they can to help out with the relief there.
How awesome is that?
See a news video about it here

So this week, I'm just asking you to pray for Joplin. To pray for the safe flight of these guys, pray that God will help show them how they can help when they get there, pray for the people of Joplin.. Dan's family.

This weekend, these soldiers could be BBQing and watching fireworks with their families celebrating our country's independence, which they have fought for! But instead they are giving all that up, because they know there's work to be done in Joplin and they want to help.

P.S. If you'd like to help fund these soldiers' flights to Missouri please visit the website JFWC.ORG or HOPE4JOPLIN.ORG for more information. You could also call the Joplin Family Worship Center at 417-291-9156.

A good kind of busy

I know I've been away for what seems like forever, and I'm sorry for that :(

....BUT....

The last two weeks have been full of fun, love, and silly times. We've been visitng family/friends in Ohio while waiting on our house to be ready.

(Saturday morning breakfast at Bob Evans w/ my family, pictured is my stepdad, Rick, and Avery with Jack)

How can you look at those pictures and not smile?

Today we are heading back to Fort Campbell. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning (I'm 32 weeks pregnant now, crazy!), Tuesday afternoon we get the keys to our house, and Wednesday our household goods are being delivered.

What have y'all been up two the past two weeks? Showing off your belly buttons too? :)

A Day at the Beach

This past Sunday, I woke up earlier than usual (Jeff usually gets up with Jack on weekends, he's up anyways). My husband had already cleaned out the car, filled the cooler with ice, packed us a lunch to put in it, and had Jack ready to go. A day trip at the beach and my first time seeing the actual Pacific Ocean. (Gosh, I love him). We were all prepped and ready to go, and I didn't have to do a darn thing!

We decided to take our furry monster with us since we would be gone all day. Luna is a really good traveler, it'll make our PCS much smoother. But riding in the car for two and a half hours takes a toll on both babies
They fell asleep right before we arrived at Ocean Shores, WA.
But they quickly woke up when we opened the doors and they heard the waves crashing on the beach. At Ocean Shores, you can drive right up on the beach! Jack was loving all the water to stomp around in.

It was 43 degrees on Sunday when we were there, and windy! But we still had a great time. I love the ocean
(and my boy!)

My little love, isn't really scared of much... (except the toilet for some reason) but the waves didn't scare him at all. Most kids I know run like madmen when a big wave rolls in. Jack was brave...
He got clobbered. He didn't cry at first.. but come on, it was 43 degrees. He held it in as long as he could before letting out the "Mama! I'm cold and wet!" cry

After a 45 minute drive back to the nearest store that sold munchkin clothes, we headed into Westport to see a lighthouse we heard about.

Isn't it gorgeous?
Gray's Harbor Lighthouse is the tallest in Washington and was built in the 1800's.

It's 135 stairs to the top (we did not climb them). Besides it being $5 a person, Jack is too little for all that and mama is too pregnant.

We had plans of eating a picnic lunch right on the beach. Instead, we backed our car up so we could see the water and ate with the back hatch open.

After lunch we searched for some seashells (and found quite a few good ones). And my wonderful husband didn't even question me when I said "Hey can you lug this piece of driftwood back to the car for me?"

I'm pretty sure that someone brough it down to the beach to burn in a campfire originally since the edges are so smoothly cut. So its probably not REAL driftwood but it's clearly been on the beach for quite a while, and I have a couple different plans in my head for this baby.

All in all, a good day at the beach!

Nana's Trip to the PNW

Last week my wonderful, amazing mama came to visit us!

Jeff was able to get off work early enough to come to the airport with Jack and I to pick her up. I was so thankful for that because it was pretty close to Jack's bedtime and we all know how cranky toddlers can be when their sleepy. But of course even though daddy was there to help, Jack couldn't let nana's arrival go smoothly... I mean how boring would that be right?
He slyly slipped out of daddies hand and took off full-speed ahead up the down escalator

Less than 2 minutes later, Nana arrived to meet a bleeding Jack and a teary-eyed, worried me. All's well now, but it was definitely a scary experience.

The very next day (Tuesday) was filled with just as much excitement. We went in for our 20week baby bean ultrasound. And found out that we are most definitely having another baby BOY!

Introducing... baby Jonah!
(Do these straight-on face shots kinda scare anyone else?)

My mama helped me register at Babies R Us... because get this... whatever is still on the registry (unbought) 3 weeks before your due date.. you get 10% off of!
We aren't going to have a baby shower this time around since it's our second baby. But we will probably just have a "Kate and Jeff are having another baby" party when we come to Ohio to visit in May. Just to get family and friends together to celebrate Jonah and allow for everyone can see us while we're home as well.
Nana in full spoilin' mode while she was splurged on Jack and bought him an adorable pair of chuck taylors

Jack and I took Nana on her first trip to Seattle! (She has been to visit us in Washington twice before Jeff deployed, but both times she came it was for medical reasons so we didn't get to do much sight-seeing)

We took her to Pike Place Market

And we rode the monorail to downtown (Jack loved it!)

And then we took her to see the water!

Jack had a wonderful time with his Nana and I think it's safe to say she felt likewise!

Too old too fast

At least for mama, jack is growing up entirely too quickly. Last night was his first night in his toddler bed. After realizing he was supposed to go to sleep, he did just fine. Unlike his mama, who was a blubbering mess! I just can't believe how big he is. They say time flies when it comes to your children, and they are so right. I can still remember the first night he was at home in his crib like it was yesterday and now he doesn't even need a crib!

Everyone keeps saying.. "Don't worry your having another one remember?" But its so not the same. Not saying I won't be totally in love with baby bean as well (or that I won't be a blubbering mess when he/she moves to a toddler bed). Jack and I have been through a lot together in his short life, and I'm not sure how I would have made it through some days without him. He's taught me so much about myself and about love. That baby boy -err- little man is amazing. I guess I should suck it up and be thankful for the opportunity God has given me to watch him grow up.

Lots of Stuff Today

I think we'll start today with some photos. Jack and I ventured to grandpa Kevin's house today, to do some laundry and visit with him. It had been way too long since they had seen each other and they played until they tuckered out! The funniest thing was that they were both snoring!

Last Thursday included a trip to Aunt Kelly and Unlce Tom's house to pick up some stuff. Ethan and Jack are almost always happy to see each other and finally have someone their own size to play with. But in this particular stretch of time, Ethan was very hungry and his mama was not moving fast enough. He started crying. Jack stared at him for a second, and then reached over and stuck his hand in Ethan's mouth. I guess he was tired of hearing that crying! haha

Now that we're all caught up on some cuteness, on with some news. A deployment update made it's way into my inbox today. The weather there is back up into the 90s on the FOB, and their only expecting it to get hotter. But being in theater for 8 months as opposed to just arriving has allowed them to prepare for the heat a little more efficently this summer. They have ice readily available and refridgerators stocked with water waiting for our boys, should they need it, and I'm sure they will. Like with every deployment, there have been rumors about redeployment circulating back at Fort Lewis, but the update concurs with the original orders 365 days. Please be aware, that this timeline is an estimate for homecoming, and does not reflect the exact date that Jeff will be returning stateside. CPT is recommending that no plans be made just yet and reassures us that he will let us know about any information he can, as soon as possible. I won't quote the rest of the email, because in my opinion it's written in quite a negative tone. It says we should focus on the last 25% of deployment, and not our soldiers' homecoming. I'm not usually ignore advice from an FRG update... but I'm for damn sure going to be focusing on Jeff's homecoming for the next couple months.

For those of you that ordered from my mom's Silpada jewelry party, she closed it today! So we should be recieving our goodies within a short time. I'm so excited to see my jewelry. I ordered some very cute two-toned earrings. I lost my favorite pair last month. I also ordered a two-toned ring with a cross on it and a 3 pack set of smaller more simple earrings. Hopefully they are as beautiful as they were in the catalog. I consider my order my early Happy Easter present from Jeff :) hehe. Thanks, dear. You're soooo thoughtful! ;)

Dinner was a gift from my dad today. Bob Evans, very yummy. Man, I'm going to miss that place when I go back to Washington. Speaking of moving, I will be calling the Fort Lewis housing office tomorrow morning and speaking with them about a move in date. So I should be able to give everyone an exact date Jack, Luna, and I will be departing Ohio after that phone call.

Closing the blog with some good grades sounds like a good idea, too bad I don't have any... Just kidding! I got a B on my Nutrition final today! I was not expecting a grade higher than a C, so I was pleasantly surprised with the results. My Sociology final is on the schedule for the coming week and then I will be done with Spring Session A! I'm still undecided in my attendence for next session. As soon as the decision is made, you all will be the first to know! Well second to know, after Jeff of course. Love to all and goodnight!

And old essay brings many memories

As most of you know, I've been very busy with schoolwork lately. Writing papers, completeing quizzes, etc. Browsing my computer, I came across some old school papers. One in particular caught my eye, and created a tear in it too. It's an essay I wrote for my English 151 class that I took at OU-C in the fall of 2008. Some of the things I stated in it just hit a special place in my heart. I wanted to share this essay with you because it's reminded myself of that special day, and how happy I was. I wrote it before I knew which direction my life was headed, before I got married, before I had Jack, before Mrs. Weisenberger passed away. The things in this essay are distant memories now, but I'm so very glad that I will always have this piece of writing to aide in my rememberence. And oddly this essay was written exactly one year before my joyous little love was born.

17 September 2008
Here Comes the Rest of our Lives

Although we arrive in separate cars, underneath each of the blue or white gowns, the anxious excitement is constant. Each car and each parent equipped with cameras, tissues, and pride, each of us ready with nervousness, anticipation, and happiness. We open the car doors, see each other, and immediately smile; knowing that today is the day that we’ve been waiting for. We hug one another, reinforcing that May 24th is the correct calendar date. Cameras flash like lightning right and left, trying to capture the once in a lifetime balance between relief and nervousness.

I look to my mother, and wonder how long she’s waited for this moment. A slideshow starts to play in my mind, beginning with a younger woman and a little blonde toddler, learning her colors from the nail polish bottles. Then comes a school bus, and a petite child wearing a sunflower dress and boots, ready with her power rangers backpack, quickly kisses her mother goodbye. Next I see a middle-aged woman, face pressed to the fence, yelling “Go number twenty-five, let’s go!” and the crack of a bat initiates the “woohoo”s and “good hit”s. The flash of a camera transforms the scene to a school gymnasium where I hear the National Honor Society pledge being repeated, and a teenage, blue-eyed blonde walks up to sign a book and receive a certificate. She looks into the crowd and sees one tear fall from the blue eyes identical to her own. Once again the background changes, to the sidewalk outside my high school. I see the building behind my mother now, rather than a crowd in a gymnasium, but the one tear still exists on her face.

I see a dark-skinned girl running towards me, trying to keep her feet in her red and black plaid pumps. The Brazilian accent I hear has become so familiar and comforts me. She smiles, I smile back, but we both know that those won’t last, tears will soon replace them. We certainly are a picture, she and I. Her long, brown curly hair is certainly a distinction from my short and platinum blonde style, and her deep brown eyes contrast my grayish blue ones. Her caramel colored skin definitely varies from mine, which is closer to that of a porcelain doll. But as we walk up to the building for the last time as students, I realize that we’re not that different. Our clothing consists of the same white gown, the same blue and white tassel, heck, even our dresses look alike. The most alike thing of all, however, is our need for friendship, and that’s the common ground on which we met.

We walk hand in hand through the doors of the school, our classmates following a step behind us. Walking leisurely down the hallway, I try to make the most of this experience, advancing as slowly as I can, and remembering all the memories made here. I can tell by the split emotions on their faces, that everyone about to enter the gymnasium with me is doing the same. We line up from “Baxter” to “Zapata” just like we practiced the day before. I hear the processional coming through the trumpets and clarinets and I know only seconds remain until we’ll be the focus of everyone’s gaze. The seconds pass and my feet begin to move. I feel like I’m walking in sand, each step taking twice as long as it normally does. Entering the full gymnasium, each of us looks around for those familiar faces that raised us, but I soon realize that every face is a familiar one. These people have all raised me.

I see the curly, redheaded, spanish teacher that taught me the language and also about how to love myself. I see the family-man softball coach that taught me the game and also how to trust people. And then I look to the crowd and see my crazy, untraditional, incomparable family. I see my little brother, his ash blonde hair, a mess as always, and his army green eyes scanning the sea of blue and white looking for me. I see my father beside him. He has the most proud look on his face that I’ve ever seen. Dad’s rough hands, from years of hard work, fumble with the small buttons on his new digital camera. My grandma and aunt sit, staring, critically analyzing our entry method, and then they wave to me. I wave back and I know their thoughts are already on to another questioning, but in my heart I know they admire my accomplishments. And then I see her, she’s not photographing me, but everyone and everything else, so that I can look back on these pictures and remember everything about it, but I’ll remember her the most. How pretty she looks in that black and white dress she’s wearing, with the white cardigan overtop she added to make herself look more mother-like. She’s had that camera glued to her hand all night. I see her look down at the program and tell the rest of my family what’s next to come.

Arriving at my seat, I turn my attention toward the stage. The document I’ve worked so hard for sits in one of those sixty-seven white envelopes stacked up on the table, and I’m a mere hour away from reading my name on that certificate. Three close friends speak to us and I remember how hard they too have worked for this day and their right to make their speeches. All three are girls, one with red hair, one with brown, and the last, a blonde. They read their thoughts to us, each speech as unique as each of their personalities.

Looking down the row, I see the difference in all of us. Just by glancing at the shoes on our feet you can tell, white thongs, pink heels, white tennis shoes, black dress shoes, and those red and black plaid pumps. Some of us have served on student council, some have played basketball, football or softball, and yet still others have sung in the choir. Then of course there are those of us who have done it all, National Honor Society, show choir, student council, softball, color guard, etc. We are a soup of vegetables, fruits, spices, and broths. Despite the path each of us has taken, we all sit here today, wearing the same white gown and getting ready to receive the same credential. It’s because of this I wonder if it has all been worth all the extra hard work I’ve done writing six pages when only five was required, completing extra-credit assignments when I already had an “A” in the class, was it really worth it?

I rise in time with the person beside me and we begin to file out of our row, preparing to accept handshakes and congratulations, and especially that white envelope sitting up there for each of us. The superintendent calls my name; I walk up the one, two, three stairs, take four more steps across the stage and I’m there! It’s in my hands! I turn, smile, say thank you and walk down the three stairs on the other side. The five most important people in my school shake my hand, I receive a blue long-stemmed flower, and I return to my seat. Yes, it was worth it. It was worth this sensation I’m feeling right now.

So many times over the past four years I’ve wondered and pondered what this would feel like. The sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I feel right now, feels nothing like I thought it would. I knew it would be a wonderful sensation, but now the bitter-sweetness starts to set in.

The song we chose for us, the class of 2008 to claim as our own plays in my mind, but I soon recognize that in reality it’s playing over the loudspeakers of the gym. The lyrics say “the best days” are yet to come, but I have had the time of my life in high school, so how could life get any better? In my head I know it will, and I can’t wait to start college and not have class every day, then pick out a dress and veil and have my best friend beside me as I start my life, and then have little blue-eyed blonde mini-me’s running around my house. But right now, my heart is saying that these people walking out these doors with me, the times I’ve spent with them in this place, and the memories we’ve made together in these hallways, these are the things I will to remember. I hug my best friend; we throw our caps into the air. The music plays (in my head this time), “here comes the rest of our lives”.

Happy Birthday Kennedy!

Last week we celebrated Kennedy's fifth birthday! Two babies, two five year olds, two dogs, a mass of jabbering adults, and a princess cake... You've got yourself quite the party! Add in the New System cookies and Chex Mix that the diet-sabotaging Kelly offered, and you get a very happy Kate!

Kennedy had a princess cake with all the Disney princess on in. Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmin, Belle, and Ariel...

The best princess of all gets to be on top of the cake of course, KENNEDY!

The jabbering adults I told you about. As we can see, Laura definitely takes the cake (notice my pun there) in the jabbering contest.

It was so nice to kind of have some help with Jack. He got some quality male bonding in with Unlce Tom. Which I'm sure his daddy is happy about, since he has been squealing instead of crying lately...

The culprit! It was she! She, I tell you who brought the oh so tastey but oh so evil New System cookies into the house. She looks guilty to me, what do you think?

The boys weren't so interested in the festivites. If you ask me, Unlce Tom told them "Okay boys, if we just hold still and don't smile, they'll leave us alone."

Definitely my favorite picture of the night. I don't know what you're talking about Kelly, you're kiddos have beautiful eyes.

Well this was right before we had to call 911... only kidding! Those candles were pretty powerful though. The blur on the right is the birthday girl going in for the kill. Unfortunately, this is the only picture I got of her on her big day.

Kennedy, you are one of the most caring little girls I've ever met. You are beautiful and I have so much enjoyed watching you grow up so far. Jeff and I love you so much, little one. I can't wait to see what God has in store for you!
